Binder

Bill of Lading (B/L)
The shipping document issued by a carrier that serves as a receipt for cargo and a contract of carriage, listing the container, seal number, and shipment details used to verify a container upon arrival.
C
Calorific Value
A measurement of how much heat energy a fuel produces, expressed in kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg). Higher calorific value generally means more heat output per session or per unit burned, and it's one of the primary numbers used to differentiate charcoal grades.
Carbonization
The process of heating raw coconut shell in a low- or no-oxygen environment to convert it into charcoal, driving off volatile compounds in the raw material. Carbonization method (traditional kiln vs rotary/tunnel kiln) directly affects the finished product's fixed carbon and ash content.
Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A document from an independent laboratory reporting the actual tested specifications, fixed carbon, ash content, moisture, calorific value, for a specific production batch. A batch-specific COA is the most reliable way to verify a supplier's claims rather than relying on a generic spec sheet.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight)
An international shipping term where the seller covers the cost of goods, insurance, and freight to the destination port, as opposed to FOB, where the buyer arranges and pays for shipping from the origin port.
Compression Pressure
The force applied during pressing that determines a briquette's density. Too little pressure produces a weak, crumbly briquette; too much pressure, above roughly 200 bar for coconut charcoal, over-compresses the binder into a brittle structure prone to cracking. Curing

Drying
The kiln stage that reduces a freshly pressed briquette's moisture from roughly 25 to 32 percent down to a stable target range, typically 4 to 8 percent depending on grade. Rushed or compressed drying is one of the most common causes of crumbling and inconsistent burn.
E
EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation)
A European Union regulation requiring documentation and traceability for certain products, including some charcoal categories, entering the EU market to verify they aren't linked to deforestation. A compliance requirement, distinct from a general sustainability claim.
ESMA
The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology, which sets conformity requirements for products, including charcoal, entering the UAE market.
F
FCL (Full Container Load)
A shipment that fills an entire container, as opposed to LCL. Charcoal exports are almost always shipped FCL, since shipping lines generally won't book less-than-container-load charcoal cargo.
Fixed Carbon
The percentage of a charcoal sample that is pure carbon, remaining after moisture, volatile matter, and ash are accounted for. This is one of the most important quality indicators, since it directly affects structural density, burn duration, and ash output. Premium grades typically require 87 percent fixed carbon or above.
FOB (Free on Board)
A shipping term where the seller's responsibility ends once goods are loaded onto the vessel at the origin port, after which the buyer covers freight and insurance. Common in charcoal export contracts.

KBLI
The Indonesian standard business classification code system, tied to a company's business registration, indicating what activities a business is legally registered to perform, such as charcoal manufacturing.
L
LC (Letter of Credit)
A bank-issued payment guarantee used in international trade, where the bank commits to paying the seller once contract conditions are met. An alternative to T/T for buyers or suppliers wanting additional payment security on larger orders.
LCL (Less than Container Load)
A shipping arrangement where cargo shares container space with other shipments, generally used by smaller buyers not yet ready to order a full container.
Lot Number / Batch Number

Moisture Content
The percentage of water remaining in a finished briquette. Excess moisture reduces heat output, causes crumbling, and can lead to mold in extended storage. Premium shisha grades typically target 3 to 6 percent moisture.
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
The smallest quantity a supplier will produce or ship for a given order, typically one full container (roughly 12 to 17 tons for a 20 ft container) for export coconut charcoal.

Indonesia's business identification number, issued through the OSS (Online Single Submission) platform, used to verify a company is legally registered.

Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)
A quality and quantity check conducted by an independent inspector before or during container loading, verifying the product matches specification and the correct quantity is being shipped.
Q
Quick-Light Charcoal
Charcoal treated with a chemical accelerant so it ignites with a match or lighter instead of a coil burner, a different product category from natural coconut charcoal, with a trade-off between convenience and flavor purity.
T
T/T (Telegraphic Transfer)
A bank wire transfer, the most common payment method in charcoal export, typically structured as a deposit before production and a balance payment before the container is loaded.
V
Volatile Matter
The portion of raw or finished charcoal that releases as gas when heated, separate from fixed carbon and ash. Higher volatile matter generally means more smoke and a less complete carbonization process.
W
Whitening Additive

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between fixed carbon and calorific value?
Fixed carbon is a percentage measuring how much of the material is pure carbon after carbonization. Calorific value measures actual heat output in kcal/kg. They're related, higher fixed carbon generally supports higher calorific value, but they're measured and reported separately on a Certificate of Analysis.
Is a Certificate of Analysis the same as a spec sheet?
No. A spec sheet describes a supplier's target or claimed specification for a grade. A Certificate of Analysis reports actual lab-tested results for a specific production batch, which is what verifies whether that batch met the claimed specification.
Why do I need to know shipping terms like FOB and CIF for buying charcoal?
These terms determine who's responsible for freight cost and risk at each stage of shipping. Understanding them prevents confusion or disputes over unexpected costs once a container is in transit.
